Rabbi Markowitz

Dr. Chanan Markowitz is the rabbi of Congregation Beth Shalom. A native of Buffalo, he joined our synagogue July 1, 2007 after serving a number of years as "rabino" community rabbi in Campinas, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Rabbi Markowitz, earned a Doctorate of Ministry from the Chicago Theological Seminary, which is affiliated with the University of Chicago. He holds rabbinic ordinations from Rabbi Dr. Moses Jacob Burack, Chancellor of Ner Israel Yeshiva Rabbinical College of Toronto, Canada and the late Rabbi Nisan Lippa Alpert. He is also a trained Cantor. He is fluent in English, Hebrew, Yiddish, German, and Portuguese. His late father, Hazzan Moshe Markowitz, served for 27 years as Cantor at Ahavas Achim Lubavitch Synagogue in Buffalo.

Dr. Markowitz was the Founding Professor of Instituto de Bioethica do Brasil (The Brazilian Institute of Medical Ethics) and Sociedade de Maimonides do Brasil (The Maimonides Society of Brazil).

  This year Rabbi Markowitz will offer two weekly adult education classes,
   A Shabbat Morning Torah Study
   on Saturdays starting at 11:00 am with kiddush and continuing with Torah Study until noon
   What is Judaism Really All About? A Scientific Approach to Jewish Theology, Customs, History and Philosophy
   on Sundays starting at 10:00 am with bagels and coffee and continuing with the class until 11:00 am.
   Both classes are open to the entire community and free of charge.
